AL File also includes some Bounty Land information No. 7728 Department of the Interior War of 1812 Survivor's Pension I certify , That in conformity with the law of the United States approved February 14, 1871, William Jeffreys, late a Pvt of captain A. Pearce's Company of Tenn Militia inscribed on the Pension List Roll of the Washington D C. agency at the rate of eight dollars per month, to commence on the 14th day of February one thousand eight hundred and seventy one. No sale, transfer or mortgage of any description whatever of the whole or any part of the pension payable in virtue of this certificate, is of any legal or binding force against either the pensioner or the United States Given at the Department of Interior this 11th day of November one thousand eight hundred and seventy one. Baker Commissioner of Pensions War of 1812 Declaration of Soldier for Pension State of Alabama County of Marion On this fourth day of April AD one thousand eight hundred and seventy one personally appeared before me John D. Tarvell Judge of the Probate Court it being a court of Record within and for the county and State aforesaid, William Jeffreys, aged 75 years a resident of near Barnesville County of Marion State of alabama who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married: that his wife's name was Malinda Bordain, to whom he was married at Morgan county Alabama on the 7th day of April 1820; that he served the full period of sixty days in the (1) military service of the United States in the War of 1812; that he is the identical William Jeffreys who (2) was drafted in Captain Abner A. Pierce's Company at Sparta Tennessee on the 9th day of September 1814 and was honorably discharged at Huntsville ala on the __March 1815; that (3) he was one of the Tennessee Militia marched from Sparta to Fort Williams on Coosa River stationed there during the winter returned from there to Huntsville Ala and was there discharged-the war having closed that he, at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort, or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority or pretended authority, in hostility to the United States; and that he will support the Constitution of the United States; that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States, under the provision of the act approved February 14, 1871 and he hereby constitutes and appoints with full power of substitution and revocation Samuel N. Niles of Washington City D.C. his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued; that his post office is at Pikeville County of Marion State of Ala that his domicile or place of abode is near Barnesville Ala. Pope residing at Pikesville and Jacob Jeffreys residing near Barnesville persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn say: they were present and saw William Jeffreys, the claimant, sign his name (or make his mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with him, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be; that at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States did he adhere to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them air or comfort; and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Pope Jacob Jeffreys Sworn to and subscribed before me this fourth day of April AD 1871 and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration &c. were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing; and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim. State of Alabama County of Marion On this 21st day of April AD 1855 personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace,within and for the county and State aforesaid, William Jeffreys aged fifty nine years a resident of the county of Marion in the State of Alabama who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical William Jeffreys who was a private in the company of Tennessee Militia commanded by Captain Pearce in the war of 1812 that he was drafted in the county of White in the State of Tennessee during the fall of the year of 1814 for a term of six months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of more than four months and was honorably discharged at Huntsville in the state of Alabama in the spring of the year 1815 on account of his service being no longer required as will appear by the Muster Rolls of said company. That he received a certificate of his discharge, but that it was lost or destroyed. That he is the identical William Jeffreys to whom a Bounty Land Warrant for eighty acres was issued under the Act of September 1850 for that said service, the numbers of which were 18000 issued on the 5th day of November 1851 and that he had legally located the said warrant and cannot return it. That he never performed any other service, and never received any other bounty land. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining eighty acres of Bounty Land to which he is entitled under the act passed during the last session of congress 3rd March 1855, that the above statement is according to the best of his recollection and that his eye sight has failed so badly that he cannot see to write being almost totally blind William (his Mark) Jeffreys Sworn to and subscribed before me on the day and year above written and I certify that I believe the said William Jeffreys is of the age above stated. And he is the identical William Jeffreys to whom Bounty Land Warrant No. 18000 for the said service issued and on the same day personally came before me James Dav___ and Benjamin M. Riggans residents of the county of Marion in the State of Alabama to me known as credible witnesses being duly sworn according to the law, declare that they were present and saw the said ------------ -------appeared before me a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid, William Jeffreys who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he has not applied for or received boundy land under this or any previous act of congress other than the application referred to as the application under which he one warrant issued under the act of Sept 28th 1850 for eighty acres No. 18000 which he has located and cannot return and that he refers to his declaration under the said act for further proof and that the reason he made his mark and did not write his name to his declaration No. 129577 under act of March 3, 1855 and now makes his mark that his eyesight has failed so badly that he cannot see to write being almost totally blind. You are required to show by the certificate of an officer of a United States Court a United States Commissioner an Assessor Assistant Assessor, Collector, Deputy Collector, or Supervisor of Internal Revenue or a Postmaster, to the satisfaction of this Office that, after careful investigation he is convinced that the above witnesses are men of undoubted good character for oath and veracity and that their statements in the affidavit referred to are worthy of full faith and credit. Pope and Jacob Jeffreys the attesting witnesses to the Declaration of William Jeffreys No. 12,598 for pension under act of 14th Feby 1871 for the last twenty years and from what I know of the said witnesses I am thoroughly convinced that they are men of undoubted good character for truth and verosity and that their statements in the affidavit referred to are worthy of full faith and credit to all of which I certify to as upon the honor of a United States Officer Given under my hand in said county the 15th day of September AD 1871 Lemuel Burnett Post Master at Gold Mine State of Alabama County of Marion On this first day of January AD one thousand eight hundred and fifty one personally appeared before me Alexander McDonald a Justice of the Peace duly authorized by law to administer oaths within and for the county and state aforesaid, William Jeffreys aged fifty five years a resident of the county of Marion in the State of Alabama who being duly sworn according to law declares on oath that he is the identical William Jeffreys who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Abner A. Pearce in the regiment of Tennessee Militia Commanded by Major Woodfork, the colonel's name he does not recollect in the war with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th June 1812. That he the said William Jeffreys was drafted in the county of White in the State of Tennessee about the twentieth day of September AD one thousand and eight hundred and fourteen for six months, and continued in actual service in said war for the term of six months and was honorably discharged at Huntsville in Alabama on or about the twenty eighty day of March AD one thousand eight hundred and fifteen on account of his term of service having expired as will appear by the muster rolls of said company. That he received a certificate of discharge but that it is lost or mislaid. That such is all the service he even performed in the military service of the United States and that he has never received a bounty of land for the same, he makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act granting bounty land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States passed September 28, 1850. William Jeffreys Sworn to and subscribed before me on this day and year above written. And I hereby certify that I believe the said William Jeffreys to be the identical man who served as aforesaid. If the above name is not found on the rolls of said Company, will you so state, and report as to the enrollment, $c. in the case of may man bearing a similar name, whom you have good reason for believing to be the soldier inquired for.
