On the same day Colonel Segura with 6000 men belonging to General Canella column, which was in pursuit of the retreating rebels, came upon more than 5,000 of the insurgents. The Spanish column had been divided in order to more effectively pursue the rebels, and the troops under Colonel Segura followed the road from Candelaria toward San Cristobal, which, as the event proved, was the route taken by the rebels. As soon as the troops came up with the insurgents, the latter formed an extensive circle about them. The troops formed into squares and continued the advance, keeping up an incessant fire that played havoc in the rebel lines. When nearing the village of Pezoo Hone the troops directed their attack upon a house that was occupied by a number of rebels and dislodged them. The building was then turned into a hospital for the troops. All this time the rebels were hovering about the troops, but Colonel Segura, who had with him a piece of artillery used it with good effect, and by means of shells caused the insurgents to finally fall back. At this juncture three squadrons of cavalry under command of Colonel Ruiz and two companies of infantry belonging to the Simanoas regiment opportunely arrived and broke through the rebel circle, thus saving Colonel Sequra’s column from what would undoubtedly have been an overwhelming defeat. The Spanish losses are given in the official report of the engagement as eight killed and thirty-=five wounded, while the supposed losses of the rebels are placed at 100 killed and ---- wounded. The above account of the fight is entirely official. MITCHELL -----(political commentary)----- BEAR CREEK NEWS There are lovely spring-like days and we can appreciate them when we recall the snow and ice and the “breath of the North” that chilled our limbs this time last year. The rain has been very abundant and the streams are much swollen. There came near being a serious accident on Brush Creek Sunday Mr. CLAUD PETERS, wife and several little children attempted crossing with an ox team. They were washed down stream about forty feet, and only saved themselves by grasping the bushes on the bank There are some cases of whooping caught among the little ones, but not very serious. Mrs. JOE STANFORD, of Greenville, Texas, is visiting her father Mr. MARSHALL NORTON, some miles south of this place. Misses LAURA WILLIAMS and BELLE PHILLIPS have just returned from a visit to Florence and Sheffield. They attended the Taylor Brothers lecture in “Yankee Doodle’ and “Dixie” while in Florence. Mr. WALLS, of Columbiana, Ala. is spending a few days in our town. Mrs. FANNIE ROBERTSON, of Landersville, Ala. is visiting her kinsmen, CHARLEY and DICK SRYGLEY at this place. The singing at the church Sunday eve was well attended. Dear friends, why can’t you come out to Sunday school too? There you can study God’s word together, and praise him in song also. RIP VAN WINKLE, February 8, 1896 In our announcement column appears the name of Hon. J. T. YOUNG as a candidate for State Senator. Mr. YOUNG is well known throughout the district as a true- blue democrat. He has had legislative experience, having served two terms in the House. It is generally conceded that it is Marion’s time and we have no better or more available man than TOM YOUNG. He is in line with his party on the money question, in close touch and sympathy with the laboring masses and if nominated and elected would make an honest, faithful and conservative member.
