Marshall County AlArchives Cemeteries.....Berry-Brookshire Cemetery - Complete Survey ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Alice Beck ameatte@gmail.com March 18, 2008, 2:21 pm Abstracted By: Alice Beck To reach Berry-Brookshire, you need to be on Blount Co Rd 25/Warrenton Rd/Marshall Co Rd 14. These are all the same road. Turn west on Berry Rd (about a mile north of the Blount/Marshall Co line)and go 1/2 mile, and turn right on Berry-Brookshire Cemetery Rd. The cemetery is the only thing on this road. Entrance sign is carved stone and says: 'Berry-Brookshire Cemetery Est 1851 Land by Mannering Brookshire 1851 Taft Berry 1960 Ed & D. T. Foust, Jr 1964 C. H. & Ruth St.John 1988 Sign by Tyrus C Baily 1990' At the far edge of an empty field, there are mors signs that say "Two acre addition given by Conrad & Ruth St. John, 1988".."Berry Brookshire Cemetery est 1851"..and "Maintained thru contrubutions to cemetery Perpetual Care Trust Fund 1520 Lusk St Guntersville, AL 35976". Hand written in the cement pad is "Sept 8, 1988". There is small field-stone 'building' on the left that looks like the door is cemented up, with 'Remember Calvary' engraved on the 'door'. A Stone cross on top has a heart and God carved on the long piece, and 'Dec 22, 1993' and 'Amazing Grace' on either side of the cross piece. There are a few graves marked only with a stone, and, perhaps, some flowers, but no writing. There is a road circling the cemetery, with only one memorial and one headstone outside of the circle. I will start with these. It is maybe 6' X 8', with a walkway around it, surrounded by a short wall. In several places there is a cement square in the wall with writings on them...'Tyrus Cobb Bailey 3-3-1913', 'Amazing Grace' in a heart, ''Tis finished 'Tis finished for sinful man' with a triangle, circle, square and diamond at the bottom. There is a low doorway into it, with rollers extending through the building and 8'-10' outside the building (as though to roll something long and heavy inside the building.) Laying on the outside rollers is a large marble slab with Tyrus' name and date at the top, a large heart with the word 'God' inside it in the middle, and 'Marble donated by brother Girtes Bailey with love' at the bottom. Screening covers the doorway. On either side of the doorway there is writing in the cement on the ground. 'SING on the left side of the doorway, and OL-LA-ME on the right. It looks like the words probably extend under the support for the rollers. It is really the most amazing thing. ***L E Dagnell-'Mother thou art now at home, Among angels fair above, But yet below thy child must roam, Till summoned by his love.' ***William Pendergrass-'Sleep father, and take thy rest, God called thee home, He thought it best.' ***Leroy Brookshire-'Like a sailor from the sea, a soldier from the field, here lies a preacher from the pulpit, with five sisters in the choir' ***Rebecca Foust-'In life she exhibited all the graces of a Christian: In death her spirit returned to God, who gave it.' ***Sam Brookshire-This appears to be a Woodmen of the World stone, but two emblems/pictures/something have fallen off. It is about 5' tall. ***Arthur Johnson-'Kind angels watch his sleeping dust.'
