Marshall County AlArchives Cemeteries.....Old City Cemetery, Arab - Complete Survey ************************************************ Copyright. It is located just off Main St, behind some stores. I checked with the store owners, local residents, the local funeral home, and city workers, and no one knew the name of this cemetery. They did have a deed dated June 6, 1884 giving the land to a Methodist church by Stephen & Martha Thompson, the town's founders. The name of the church was not listed, and no one I talked to had ever heard of a church being at that location. Stephen named the town after his son, Arad, but due to a clerical error in the approval process, the name was spelled Arab, instead. Stephen & Martha are buried here. The Alabama Historical Society has come up to check it out, and the city plans on upgrading it replacing the fence, repairing stones, etc. It is on the corner of Shoal Creek Trl NE & 1st St NE, just one block off Main St. Abbreviations used: MM =Military Marker FT = Footstone FHM =Funeral Home Marker HC = hand carved s/a = same stone as pic = picture of deceased ood = Only one date eng = engraved/engraving WW = Woodmen of the World M/M = Mr & Mrs Fld st = Field Stone noi = No other info 'T' Baby=Traced with the fingers, errors could be made s/o, d/o, w/o, h/o=son, daughter, wife or husband of Last Name First Name Middle Name Birth Death Comment --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clotfelter Will 3-23-1855 1-16-1930 s/a Mamie Clotfelter Mamie 12-12-1858 12-21-1938 Clotfelter Nelia 11-1-1878 3-27-1926 Roberts Baby Boy HC noi Roberts Zula Mae HC noi McDonald Marcus A 1-23-1842 2-27-1907 Father s/a Harriette McDonald Harriette 9-4-1842 No date Mother Martin Jesse B 1892 1927 s/a Mary A Martin Mary A 1853 1898 Buchanan C C 12-9-1860 8-24-1920 Gannon Emma E 7-1-1890 11-28-1911 d/o CC & M Buchanan Unknown No stone, but flowers were placed here.
