Additional Comments: Prominent Farmer Killed By Tractor Published Thursday, July 31, 1952 in The Boaz Leader A prominent farmer was killed Tuesday when the tractor which he was driving overturned and crushed him. Burks “Burt” Walden, Boaz, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Gadsden. He was 56 years of age. An employee of the Farmer's Co-operative in Boaz, Walden was clearing and grading land near a gin on the Douglas Highway just out of Boaz at the time of the accident. The plow which the tractor was pulling became imbedded in the hard, dry earth. In an effort to pull it loose, Walden stepped on the accelerator and released the clutch suddenly. But the plow held firm, flipping the tractor over backwards and pinning Walden underneath. Mrs. Walden and daughter had just driven to the scene and witnessed the traged, which occurred about 8:45 a. m.. Well-known throughout the county, Walden was a member of Whitesville Baptist Church. Funeral services were held on Wednesday. Included in the survivors is a son, U. A. Walden, of 1007 Litchfield Ave., East Gadsden.
