His academic education was at Green Academy, Huntsville, Alabama; collegiate education at the University of Virginia. In 1846 he began the study of medicine; Dr. Geo. B. Wood, of Philadelphia, was his private preceptor. He took the degree of M. D. from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1849, and the degree of Doctor of Laws [LL.D] from the same university, in 1875. He also studied his profession at the University of France, hospitals of Paris, and afterwards at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, then at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and settled in Mobile, Alabama, in 1854...
