June 28, 1892 Mobile, Ala., June 24. -- The trial of what are termed the "Catherine conspiracy cases" begun in the United States district court yesterday. In September, 1890, Grinville Burnett, colored, was appointed postmaster at Catherine, Ala. The white citizens objected to him, and urged him not to take the office, but he qualified in December, 1890. On the 13th of that month, he resigned, and it is alleged that the resignation was caused by force and intimidation on the part of twenty or more white men. Ed Taylor, Watt Gambutt, Joseph King and others were indicted on the charge of conspiracy to prevent an officer of the United States from holding office. The trial begun yesterday and will be continued today.
