Wednesday morning, April 8, 1885 Page One Death of an Indian Chief John R. Dickins, of Dickins Ferry On Monday, John R. Dickins died at his residence at Dickins’ Ferry, on Dog River, about twenty -five miles from the city. John R. Dickins was, and has been, for a score or more years familiar to the eyes of every man, woman and child in and about Mobile. He was made conspicuous by his eccentric peculiarities which displayed themselves in a strong desire to practice the habits and customs of the Indians even while living in a civilized and intelligent community. His life was an eventful one, and fraught with many incidents and adventures of great magnitude than are met with in the lives of most men; but little is know, however, of the details of his life. He was born in Georgia about seventy years ago. From Georgia he went to Texas, and it is believed that it was there he was first thrown with the Indian tribes with whom he afterwards became identified. He went to the home at which he died several years before the war. He was a frequent visitor to this city, and always attracted attention by his attire, which was the full dress of an Indian, consisting of buckskin coat with breeches and leggings of the same material, ornamental with beads and buckskin cap, set off with feathers. It has been his habit for several years past to visit the Indian Territory where he would devote several months to visiting the different tribes and looking up his friends. One peculiarity of these visits was that he would leave home without the knowledge of his family who never knew of his whereabouts until his return. At the time of his death he held the title of chief of one of the tribes. – Mobile Register File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/mobile/obits/d/dickins1552gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
