From the SW corner of the Monroe County Courthouse Square, go west on Claiborne St. (AL 47) 0.2 miles to Sumter St. Turn right (north) on Sumter and the cemetery is on the left of the street with a cyclone fence around it. The cemetery is behind the original location of the Methodist Church that was first built in 1835. It was a very primitive frame structure that was used for many years. In 1880 the church building was remodeled and a steeple and bell were added. That served the congregation until 1916. The structure is no longer there. (This information was taken from "History of First United Methodist Church, Monroeville, Alabama", written by Permilia S. (Pat) Lazenby, and published in February, 1979) This cemetery was surveyed in February of 2002. The listings are in the order of the survey, not as found in the cemetery. Where an * is found, it indicates that the data was not readable. Parantheses () indicate something that was added by the surveyer. Wiggins, Leonard E.
