Hestle of Mt. Pleasant, one of the best and most revered citizens of Monroe County had been shot and mortally wounded on last Friday by Ike Lambert, well known in that section. The facts as we learned them are substantially as follows: Lambert armed himself with a double barrel shotgun and two revolvers and made every other preparation for his contemplated deed on the evening prior to the shooting and rode over to a neighbor (Mr. McCall) and requested him to tell Jake English (a colored blacksmith) to be at his shop early the next morning as he intended to kill him, which the neighbor, of course, did not do. Lambert then returned to his home, it is supposed, but was discovered at the shop from which the blacksmith was absent. Early Friday morning he told a Negro that McCall had fooled him for which he intended to kill both McCall and the blacksmith too, but first he would ride over and kill Mr. Hestle, which threat he proceeded to execute. Arriving at Mr. Hestle's house he called to that gentleman, who invited him to come in. Lambert replied that his business was to kill him and before Mr. Hestle could get out of the way or defend himself, he fired both barrels of the gun at him. The balls of the shot taking effect in his left arm and chest, Mr. Hestle fell to the ground unconscious while Lambert rode off at full speed. He then went to Dixie Landing for the purpose of killing Mr. Henderson, who has a store there, and his clerk. Neither of these parties being present, he fired a load into the body of the Negro left in charge of the building who will doubtless die from the effects of the wound. Sheriff Burns left for the scene of the bloody affair as soon as he received the news. Lambert was found Sunday by the roadside near his home in a drunken sleep. It is supposed he fell from his horse, and was captured with little difficulty though at great risk, brought to Monroeville and housed in jail. Lambert is very reticent on the subject and seems much annoyed when questioned, though he says he is not conscious of having done anything wrong. Lambert is about 35 years of age and bore a good reputation in his neighborhood for his honesty, sobriety and industry, but about 3 years ago he began to drink heavily which he has kept up continually until his reason has been almost destroyed. No other reason is assigned for the shooting. Mr. Hestle is mortally wounded by best accounts. His physicians express a possibility of his recovery,in which hope his many friends earnestly join. Additional Comments: It was hard to read the date. Mr. Hestle and employee survived and Lambert was charged with Assault with Intent.
