Smith at his home near Monroe Station. The assassin crept up while Mr. Smith and his family were at supper and fired a charge of buckshot through an open door. Four of the balls took effect in Mr. Smiths body just below the shoulder, two perforating the upper portion of the lung: two balls struck Mr. Smiths' little daughter in the arm and one struck Mrs. Smith in the hand. The remainder of the charge lodged in the door frame just behind Mr. Smith. The assassin evidently stood only a few feet from and to the rear of his intended victim. Mr. Smith's injuries are dangerous and may prove fatal, although the latest information from his bedside is to the effect that he is resting as quietly as could be expected under the circumstances. The injuries sustained by the wife and daughter are slight. Warrants were sworn out charging Issac, Joseph and Jesse Shirley, brothers-in- law of Mr. Smith with the crime. The Shirleys were arrested on Monday and lodged in Jail. Owing to the crowded condition of the cells, the prisoners were removed to the jail at Brewton for safe keeping until the date appointed for preliminary hearing.
