After several months of calm, the homicidal mania seems to have broken out with increased virulence, Monday being marked by two killings in opposite extremes of the county and within a few hours of each other. A third assault with intent to murder occurred the same day. Stephen D. Steele, a well-known citizen of the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood was shot and killed by Will Hall at an early hour in the morning. From the best information obtainable, it appears that Steele was supervisor of a roadworking gang of which Hall was a member. Steele objected to the manner in which Hall was doing the work assigned him. A quarrel took place when Hall drew his pistol and shot the supervisor three times. It is said Hall claims self- defense, that Steele attempted to drawn a gun first but he himself was quicker. Mr. J.S. Stacey was killed by Hub Williams at Midway on Monday afternoon. The killing was the result of an argument over the location of a range line fence and according to the statement of Mr. Williams,he did the killing in self- defense, after which he came to Monroeville and voluntarily surrendered to the sheriff. Clinton McWilliams, colored, had some trouble with another negro a few miles west of Monroeville Monday, his concluding argument being delivered from the muzzle of a shotgun. His victim was painfully but not fatally injured. All three prisoners are in jail here.
