The evidence brought out by the states' attorneys indicated that the killing was unprovoked by any immediate instigation, whatever may have been the previous occasion of ill feeling between the parties. The deceased was shot in the back, twenty four buckshot taking effect in his body. The blood-stained clothing exhibited in the trial bore mute testimony in support of this theory. There were no eye-witnesses to contradict the state's contention. The preliminary hearing in the case of Will Hall, charged with the murder of Stephen Steele near Uriah on February 7, was held before Judge Fountain Tuesday resulting in the commitment of the defendant to jail without the privilege of bail. A number of eyewitnesses were examined whose testimony indicated that Hall provoked a difficulty with Mr. Steele, who was acting road overseer at the time, by refusing to work and shot him the moment he manifested resentment. Not content with one shot, the defendant followed up firing three additional shots into the body of his retreating antagonist.
