Smith died at his home in Monroeville on Sunday, May 28 after an illness of several months. As is well known to many of the Journal readers, an attempt was made to assassinate Mr. Smith nearly two years ago, several gunshot wounds being inflicted on his person and for many weeks his life hung by a brittle thread. He finally recovered partially but never regained his original strength and at frequent intervals was forced to lay down all his business engagements and take to his bed. These attacks became more frequent and more severe until death came as a welcome release from suffering. He leaves a wife and two children and numerous other relatives to whom we extend sympathy.
