Elly Ruff Barnes received his entire education at the hands of his father whose schools he attended at Strata and Highland Home, graduating from the latter college June, 1891. He spent four summer vacations in normal study under distinguished specialists. He began teaching immediately upon graduation, assisting his father for seven years in his Alma Mater, and removed to Montgomery in 1898 where he taught one year in the city boy’s high school. He again joined his father and together they conducted the Barnes school for boys in Montgomery, founded in 1898, and became principal of the school after his father’s retirement. He is a Democrat and member of the Church of Christ. Married: June 9, 1897, at Highland Home, to Ula, daughter of Temple and Ladie (Anderson) Bowling who lived at Russellville, and formerly in Adairville, Ky.; granddaughter of judge Robert C. Bowling of Logan County, Ky., and a descendant of Jonathan Clark who was the brother of George Rogers Clark both of whom were heroes of the northwest territorial history. The Andersons lived at Lebanon, Tenn., and were of Revolutionary ancestry. Col. Paul Anderson, uncle of Mrs. Barnes, commanded a Confederate regiment known as "Paul’s People." She had five uncles who were officers in the C. S. Army. Children: 1. Justus Mac, jr.; 2. Robert Bowling. Residence: Montgomery Additional Information: Elly Ruff Barnes is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery County, Alabama with his wife, Ula. Ula was born July 04, 1878 and died April 20, 1957. They share a tombstone. Also buried in the same plot is their son, Justus McIlwane Barnes, born December 02, 1902, died January 03, 1980. He became a physician. Buried with Justus is his wife, Frances Shakleford, born March 16, 1909, died August 08, 1974. They also share a stone. This plot is the family plot of James Madison Garrett, Jr., son of James Madison Garrett and his wife, Sophronia Arabella "Belle" Garrett of Mount Willing, Lowndes County, Alabama. James Madison Garrett, Jr. married first Lucy Tankersley on September 29, 1889. She died September 21, 1910 and is buried in this same family plot. James Madison Garrett, Jr. married second Mary Cleveland Barnes, daughter of Justus McDuffie Barnes and Ethel Rawden, their first child and half-sister to Elly Ruff Barnes. They were married September 06, 1911 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama. James was born September 24, 1864. He was the city engineer for a time with his son, Roy. James died December 20, 1943. Mary Cleveland Barnes Garrett was born January 05, 1881 and died March 22, 1930. They are buried in the family plot and share a stone. Elly & Ula's son, Robert Bowling Barnes, earned a PhD and went on to teach at the University of Connecticut, Stamford. He married Eva Hoffman. Robert was born June 9, 1906 and died August 7, 1981.
