His family were originally Scotch. Most of his early life was spent in Marshall county, Mississippi. He received an English education, with a smattering of Latin, in an old field school and an academy in the adjacent town of Holly Springs. Subsequently, without the help of teachers, he learned the French, Italian, Spanish and Portugese languages, so as to be able to read them. He graduated in medicine first in the Botanic Medical College of Memphis, in 1857; and subsequently graduated again in 1861, in the medical department in the University of Nashville... Early in the War he was appointed a surgeon in the Confederate army, and served as such until the end of the War, mostly in military hospitals...
