Censuses of Autauga & Montgomery reveal only one William of the correct age: 1830 Autauga Co: W. Martin 3 males under 5; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 60-70; 3 females 20-30; 1 female 30-40; and 1 female 50-60. 1840 Montgomery Co: William Martin: 2 males 10-15; 1 male 70-80; 2 females 30-40; 1 female 70-80. William Martin was in Alabama by 1818, when he gave consent for his daughter's marriage. This is also believed to be the same William Martin who filed an 1834 Revolutionary War Pension Application in Montgomery in 1834 and in it states that he was born in Caroline County Virginia about 1760 and moved to Anson County, North Carolina with his father at the age of 14, where he served with Walter Ross and John Dejarnette, who were living in Autauga County at the time of his application. He stated he had lived in Alabama seventeen years, living in Autauga County, before moving to Montgomery four years prior to the application. William Martin served as a volunteer under Colonel Thomas Wade and Major Jonathon Jackson. He was in one engagement against Col McNeile, a Tory, at Bettes Bridge and Drowning Creek. William Martin's name appears on a marble plague on the second floor of the Alabama Archives & History Building, listing men who served in the Revolutionary War and resided in Montgomery County, Alabama. From his records, he actually lived in Autauga County longer than Montgomery County. According to John Chapman's History of Edgefield County (SC), the Martin family of Martintown, SC was of Scotch-Irish origin. The family emigrated from the north of Ireland somewhere towards the close of the seventeenth century and settled originally in Caroline County, Virginia. They resided in Virginia for many years, and finally scattered . There is a will in Anson County, NC of a William Martin that could likely be William's father. In this 1793 will, William names his "first children": William, John, Thomas, Abraham, Cathrine, Lewis, Andrew, & Isaac. His wife, Rebekah, and "young children" James, Sarah, & Nancy were mentioned. Executors were Thomas Vining and J. Thomas Martin. There seems to be a strong association with the ROSS family, in that William states in his pension application that his "father's register (regarding his birthdate) is in the hands of Walter Ross of Autauga County." Walter Ross was the son of Andrew Ross and Elizabeth, and had a brothers named John, James, & Martin Ross; and sisters: Frances Duckworth, Mary Williams, & Elizabeth Vining.. Walter was born in 1761 in Caroline Co, Virginia, married Margaret Williams and also served in the Revolutionary War from Anson County, NC. His children's names were: Betsy, William, John, Andrew,Galespie, Frances, Catherine, and Rebekah. William Martin's wife's name is unknown. Her youngest child, Martha, indicated her place of birth as South Carolina, and her mother's place of birth to be Ireland in the 1880 census. She apparently died between the 1840 census and her husband's 1843 will. William Martin is believed to be the William Martin listed in the Edgefield County, South Carolina 1790, 1800 and 1810 Federal censuses. Children of William Martin are: 2 i.
