Warren & Marilyn Cheney 3821 Gober Road Millbrook, Alabama 36054 THE WRIGHT FAMILY CEMETERY Springhill Road, Pine Level, Montgomery County, Alabama 1855-1883 Burial place of some members of the following families: Wright, Battle, Garrard, Guice, Dickson, and Swint. All the families listed and all the persons written about in this article are allied to the Wright Family. B. Warren Cheney & Marilyn Axtell Cheney - 1981 FORWARD We first became interested in the old Wright Family Cemetery while researching my family line: The Cheney Family of Montgomery County, Alabama. Our interest increased as we knew more of the Wright Family, one of the many allied families of the Cheney Family Line. In August, 1980, it was decided to attempt to write a correction paper on the old cemetery because of the many errors we found in the WPA cemetery records which were written in the mid- 1930's. My family connection to the Wright Family is verified by the "Marriage of John Edmund Cheney to Queen Ann Wright on May 11, 1876, at Pine Level, Montgomery County, Alabama. The wedding was conducted by the Rev. T. J. Miles, Minister of God (Ref.: Marriage Book 5, Pag6-264, Montgomery County, Alabama records). Queen Ann Wright was the daughter of David Fulton Wright and his wife, Jannette (Goss) Wright. David and Jannette Wright came to Alabama from Georgia, stopping first in Chambers County near LaFayette, and living there until December, 1853. In 1853, the Wrights again moved, this time to near the village of Pine Level, in Montgomery County, and resided there until their deaths. We have conducted extensive record searches and have visited the Old Wright Cemetery many times to verify the names of the persons buried there. Great care has been taken to search and log any information that might be of interest to anyone that has an interest in the Wright Family and the old cemetery. We have added to the tombstone inscriptions some information we believe could be helpful. The writing of this article is-not meant to discredit the research or writings of anyone, whether or not in print. Perhaps this writing will provide information to some seeking their ancestors and will preserve the memory of those who came before us to settle the area, as well as mark the final resting place of some of my ancestors.. B. Warren Cheney, January 1981 SPECIAL THANKS for their assistance goes to Mrs. Emma Biebirt Axtell of Pinellas Park, Florida, Judge Joseph Phelps of Montgomery,,, Alabama, Mrs. Dean Reynolds and Family, of Soquel, California and Deputy Sheriff Roy Simmons, Mrs. Jessie Mae Odessa Spears and Mrs. Lily Zuber Jones of Montgomery County, Alabama. THE CEMETERY Presently owed by Joseph Phelps, Montgomery, Alabama, the Wright Cemetery is located two miles west of Pine Level, just off Springhill Road (From US 231, turn west on Woodley Rd. and proceed west to the intersection of Springhill and turn left onto it. Proceed about 1/2 mile and turn left into the first gate on the left, following the tractor road into the hay field. The cemetery is located in the clump of trees in the field).
