Age 87 years, 0 months 26 days [born May 1829], resident of Alabama 67 years. Enlisted Spring 1863 in CSA, 34th Alabama Infty, as a Private, then was detailed as a blacksmith for the Confederacy in Elmore Co, AL. Don’t remember Company, re-enlisted until close of war, did not receive a parole and was home on detail as blacksmith, and being in the interior of the country was not called on for parole. Post office at that time was Central Institute, Elmore Co, AL. Married September 1852 on a Sunday. Wife’s age is 83 ˝ years. Living children listed as: J. C. Gayler age 62, occupation farmer [born 1854] G. B. Gayler age 57, occupation farmer [born 1859] Mrs. J. E. Caldwell age 46, occupation Married [born 1870] Mrs. Early Skinner age 44, occupation Married [born 1872] Mrs. J. O. Rast age 40, occupation Married [born 1876] Stated he was overlooked on Confederate census made by the State of Alabama. Was living with Mrs. J. E. Caldwell at time of application. Signed: James F. Gayler 31 May 1916, affidavit of service for James F. Gayler by G. W. McCutchin stating James F. Gaylor served Co. I, 31st Alabama Inf. Reg., Camp Lomax, Montgomery, Alabama. Witnesses: W. R. Brassell and F. M. Martin, P.O. Montgomery, known James F. Gaylor for 30 years and 6 years respectively. 27 May 1917 Sarah Ann Gaylor, wid of James F. applied for pension, resident of Montgomery Co, AL. Stated they had lived 4 years in Lexington Dist, SC, 7 years in Macon Co, GA, rest of time in Tallapoosa, Elmore and Montgomery Cos, AL.
