This file was contributed and copyrighted by: Jennie Durao ================================================================================ October 2002 From the Alabama Journal News Social Calendar for Wednesday June 6, 1944 Buffet Supper to Open State Convention of Confederacy Children Sophie Bibb Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Nelly Gunter Elmore Chapter, children of the Confederacy, are hostess groups for the two day state convention of the Alabama division of the Confederacy, which opens this evening with a buffet supper at 7 o'clock at the Women's Club, Headquarters for the convention. Mrs. George L. Bryan and Mrs. T. J. Stringfellow are in charge of the Supper. Mrs. Pickett Smith and Miss Dorothy Joseph, presidents of the hostess chapters, will direst the meetings. The convention theme will be "Loyalty" and the program will be dedicated to Mrs. Jesse C. Roberts, director of the Nelly Gunter chapter and past president of the Alabama division, U.D.C. Mrs. Vivian Hieronymus, of Mobile, third Vice-President of the Alabama division, and Miss Ann McArthur, President of the C. of C. will preside at the business session. The 'Directors' Breakfast Wednesday morning at the Jefferson Davis will open the day's program. During the morning memorial service will be held for Billy Daugette, grandson of Mrs. C.W. Daugett, of Jacksonville, Ala. A luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. for the convention guest. Mrs. Foster Hays is Chairman of the luncheon. The members of the Sophie Bibb chapter will be hostess at the Garden Party at 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon given in the lovely garden of Mrs. Gregory Jones on the Woolly road and honoring Mrs. Hieronymus, Miss McArthur, Mrs. Adelaide Van Divir. State President; Mrs. M. T. Maxwell, of Tuscaloosa, first Vice- President general. Other distinguished guests will share honors. The Cradle of the Confederacy and Dixie chapters will assist entertaining. A Tea at 6:30 p.m. at the Woman's Club will assemble the delegates and visitors with Mrs. Ira Virgin acting hostesses. Historical Evening will be held at the club at 8 o'clock with a dance following. Acting hostesses will be the following members of the Nelly Gunter Elmore chapter: Dorothy Joseph, President; Julia Lee Lollaway, Corinne Walker, Marion Gabbert, Emily Lacy, Ann Carter Hayes. Mrs. Cecil Cates will be Chairman of arrangements for the dance, assisted by Mrs. Joe Holoway, Miss Gabbert, Miss Joseph, Miss Martha Ryan. Miss Margaret Watson will be in charge of entertaining features assisted by Sally Watkins Wood and Eleanor Bobzin. Registration will be in charge of Mrs. George Jones, assisted by Miss Gabbert and Miss Lacy. Mrs. Ben Davis is chairman of badges; Mrs. Reuben Chason, transportation, assisted by Mrs. J.L. Rolen: Mrs. Roberts is serving as general chairman of the convention with Mrs. Pickett Smith co-chairman. Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Carr Buchanan, committee on publicity. Other chairmen assisting are charge of Mrs. Roberts, program; Mrs. A. C. Watson, pages; Mrs. Charles Steagall, Mrs. Robert West, Mrs. G .C. Harman, Mrs. T.E. Harris, Miss Wood, Miss Martha Ryan, Miss Martha Watson, Ellen Bobzin and Louise Johnson. The following will represent the Boys division: Earl Daly, John Sherlock, Vivian Hieronymus, Benny Hill Jr., Billy Brown, Johnny Woodley, with Warren Bickerstaff, bugler. The following state officers of the C. of C. will attend: Jean Hurlbert, of Eufaula, and Helen Hullins, of Phoenix City, Vice-Presidents; Grace Wellman, of Phoenix City, recording secretary; Carolyn Ingram, of Mobile; Historian; Jean Russelle, of Mobile, treasurer; Jane Danilow, of Tuscaloosa, chaplain.
