McDONALD, a resident here 67 years, says he was born in 1829 on a plantation near Charleston, S.C., owned by Mace BUTLER, wealthy Philadelphia merchant. when he was 12 he was sold on the Savannah, Ga., slave market for $500 to a cotton planter of Columbus, GA. After four years in the cotton fields he was sold, this time for $1,000 to a Montgomery, Ala. planter. The planter gave him to his son, John McDONALD, Jr., an attorney. After the War Between the States, McDONALD came here,a nd for many years held the job of lighting the gas street lamps.
