Mr. Brown was superintendent of streets in Montgomery for the past eight years. He was born in Upshaw (sic-Upson) County, Ga., in 1868 and when a young man entered the railroad business. He later became associated with a road building concern. From 1887 to 1891 he was associated with the firm of Hardaway & Hannon in constructing the old S. A. M. Railroad from Montgomery to Americus. In 1892 he worked on one of the first hard-surface roads in the county, the old Mobile Highway and afterwards worked under the Board of Revenue as construction foreman. After working in the coontracting business for himself several years he was made superintendent of streets for the city. His first wife was Viola T. Rutherford, who died in 1910. He later married Annie Walker. He was a deacon in the Southside Baptist Church and was a Dokey, Red Man and member of the Knights of Pythias. He is survived by his widow and the following children. Cecil, Rutherford, Josephine, Annie, J. G., Jr., Joe and Frank; two brothers, Joseph Brown, Birmingham; George Brown, Kellerman and a sister, Mrs. Lilla Crabtree, of Missouri. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Leak Company.
