David Westcott Murrell, son of Susannah Railey and Samuel Rider Murrell, born 20 April 1833, in Montgomery County, Alabama, married on 13 November 1851 Sarah Amanda Palmer, born 17 December 1837, daughter of Eliza Tankersley and Josiah Palmer. The Montgomery Advertiser obituary of David Westcott Murrell, who died on 16 June 1905, reads: "Death of Mr. Murrell" "Substantial Farmer Passes Away Near Hope Hull." "News has been received in Montgomery of the death of Mr. David W. Murrell, one of the oldest and best known farmers of Montgomery County, at his home near Hope Hull, about sixteen miles south of the city. "Mr. Murrell died Friday evening. He was buried in the family burial ground near the Murrell place Saturday afternoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Samuel Jordan of Highland Home. "The funeral of Mr. Murrell removes one of the best citizens of Montgomery County. He was 72 years old and had lived all of the years of his life within the borders of this county. He was a quiet, unpretentious, unassuming man whose life was full of good deeds and whose upright character left its impress upon the community in which he lived. "At the beginning of the war between the States, Mr. Murrell was in good circumstances but, like many others, his means were swept away by the ravages of war and by his generosity toward the cause he loved so well. He was a gallant soldier with Clanton's brigade and his old comrades had a tender regard for him. "Mr. Murrell is survived by his wife and five sons and daughters. They are: David W. Murrell and Hop Murrell of Hope Hull, Troy Murrell, a popular member of the Montgomery Police Department, and Mrs. [Pauline M.] Sanderson and Miss Willie Murrell of Hope Hull."
