Miss Sarah Barton died at 3 o'clock A.M. at her Mother's residence in Montgomery County, State of Alabama on 2 Oct 1844. A few hours before her death she made a verbal will in my presence as being, I thought, perfectly rational to her brothers Absalom & Thos P. Barton. She gave a negro woman named Evy & her children to her nephew Wm. Daniel. She gave a negro woman named Annie & her eldest and two young children to her niece Susan Daniel. She gave a negro girl named Doreas being the second child of the negro woman Annie. She described that her brother J.R. Barton and Thos. Zimmerman should take charge of the said negroes for the benefit of the said Susan & William Daniel so that William Daniel might be educated. She futher said that in the event of their death before they arrived to adult age that the negroes be divided between her brothers J.R., Absalom & Thos P. and brother-in-law Thomas J. Zimmerman.
