He spent his early days on a farm, and received a good education in the high school at Tuskegee, Ala. Since 1809 he has been engaged in milling and agricultural pursuits. In 1872 he went to Danville, Montgomery County, Tex., and kept books two years, at the same time supervising property in that vicinity which he had inherited from an uncle. In January, 1887, he located at Decatur, purchased property, and, in partnership, with David T. Morgan, established a real estate and stock brokerage business. E. W. Burch, Sr., was born in Georgia, came to Montgomery County, Ala., with his parents at a very early day, and became an extensive planter. He served as an officer of cavalry during the Creek War. He moved to Macon County, Ala., about 1850, and died there soon after. He was twice married, and reared six children. The mother of the subject of our sketch was a daughter of Geo. W. Thompson, a native of Georgia, and one of the pioneer settlers of Montgomery, Ala. He surveyed that city for Colonel Dexter about 1833, and was afterward employed by the United States Government in Louisiana.
