D. T. Harris, of the above firm, was born in Hollidaysburg, Pa., in 1860, and is a son of T. P. and Margaret J. Harris, natives of Wales, who first came to this country and settled in Pennsylvania. In 1861 they moved to Knoxville, Tenn., and in 1865 moved back to Ohio, to a place called Ironton. At an early age, D. T. Harris left school to work in a machine shop, staying there for about six months. He was employed as salesman in a hardware store, and was quite successful; he was in the hardware business for about eleven years. Coming to Decatur in 1887, he organized the now flourishing and enterprising firm of Harris & Watkins Hardware Company. He was married in 1855 to Miss Mary S. Jones, of Ironton, Ohio. Mr. Harris is a Knight of Pythias and member of the Uniformed Rank, also a member of the National Fire Insurance Association.
