Rgt. COMPANY E, JOE JOHNSTON RIFLES, 1ST ALABAMA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT The Company was organized on April 29th, 1898, at a meeting in Decatur, Alabama, and Osceola Kyle was elected as Captain, William E. Wallace as First Lieutenant and M.N. Pride as Second Lieutenant. At 9 p.m. on the 26th Captain Kyle sent a telegram to the Governor offering the services of the Company for service in the War with Spain. A response was received an hour and a half later in response which accepted there services and instructed them to report to Camp Clark in Mobile, Alabama. The Company reported for service at Camp Clark on May 1st, 1898, with seventy- six Officers and men. On May 13th, 1898, the Company was mustered into United States service as Company E of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment, United States Volunteers, for two years service under Captain William E. Wallace, as a result of Captain Kyle being selected as a Major in the Regiment. On May 22nd, 1898, the Regiment was divided into three Battalions and the Companies were assigned accordingly, the Company was assigned to the Third (3rd) Battalion along with Companies B, E, and F, under the Command of Major Osceola Kyle. On June 13th, 1898, the Company was presented a flag by nine-year-old Mamie Wallace, the daughter of Captain Wallace, that had been purchased by the citizens of the two Decatur’s. The Company served with Battalion and the Regiment in all of its movements and stations until it was mustered out of United States service with the rest of the Regiment on October 31st, 1898, at its Camp near East Lake, Alabama.
