M. and Elizabeth Means, was born in Morgan county, Ala., Oct. 20, 1853, and died Dec. 30, 1884, of pneumonia. She was married to G. C. Sparkman, Sept. 13, 1872. Sister Sparkman was a member of the Methodist Church at Forest Chapel, where she was much loved by us all. I do not know how long she lived in the service of our Heavenly Master. I have only known and lived near her about five years, but always found her a quiet, peaceable Christian lady. She left a bereaved husband, five little children, and one brother and sister to mourn their loss, which is her eternal gain. She spoke of death as one having no fears—said she would soon be with Aunt Nancy and her own little babe which had preceded her a few days. She tried to sing that beautiful hymn “In the sweet by and by,” just before she fell asleep. As a wife she was ever loving and affectionate; as a mother, kind and indulgent; as a Church-member, faithful and prayerful; and while I write this notice (by request) of her death I can but feel that not only our Church has lost a faithful member but I have lost a good, kind neighbor. When I look across the way to her house and see her almost heart-broken husband and little boys at work in the field, and think of their lonely and desolate condition, my heart goes upward to Him who has promised to comfort the motherless ones and all who put their trust in him. May the Lord bless and comfort all that are bereft of loved ones. Mrs. E. M. Isley.
