Hugh LeBaron hlebaron@ms.metrocast.net February 2001 Source: Butler Estate Papers 53-055-0238 Perry County, Alabama LEONARD BUTLER ESTATE PAPERS Perry County, Alabama Debts Owed to the Estate of Leonard Butler May 28, 1851 LEONARD BUTLER died on the evening of February 21, 1851 at his home in Perry County, Alabama of typhoid fever. He was born in South Carolina on June 5, 1808 and migrated to Alabama with his father DR. EPHRAIM BUTLER. Dr. Butler was born about 1760 in Chester County, South Carolina and died on July 29, 1836 in Perry County, Alabama at the age of seventy-six. He was a member of the Medical Board of Perry County. Leonard Butler joined the Ocmulgee Baptist Church near where he lived in December 1828 and remained a member until his death over two decades later. He attended the Alabama Baptist Convention in 1844, 1845, 1848, 1849 and 1850 as a delegate from Ocmulgee Church. He was married to JUDITH P. WILLIAMS on September 2, 1831. Butler was a successful planter and businessman. He constructed a sawmill, gristmill, tanning yard and shoe and saddle manufacturing operation on his property located in southeast Perry County, Alabama in the Oak Grove Beat. He maintained a large household of sixteen people in 1850 that consisted of seven children, two shoemakers named NILES LITTLE and GEORGE P. HILL, his mother in law, RACHAEL WILLIAMS (born 1771 in South Carolina, and four others. He was a member of the Masonic Order and is buried in the cemetery at Ocmulgee Church. His children included Angeline E., William S., James P., Andrew J., David W., Abner R., and Leonard R. Butler.
