Hugh LeBaron hlebaron@ms.metrocast.net November 10, 2006, 10:15 am Marion Alabama January 20th 1861 Dr Sir: Being Desirous of Embarking in the farming & timber trade: and hearing of your Eminence as a Rail Splitter is my Reason for writing to you. being a Speculator in Suthron lands and having an Interest in Every State South and wishing to improve that Interest and hearing of your Profound Judgement on the Fence question I will with Due Deference ask your advice as to fencing in my South carolina Georgia Alabama Mississippi Louisiana and Florida Lands. There is a variety of timber which rails can be made of for Instance John Brown Rails, Horace Greely do, Fred Dougelass do, Black Republican do, States Rights do, and Constitutional Rails. now I would Like to Know which in your honest Opinion and Judgement is the Best timber to fence in this valuable Land with give me your views as to timber lasting Longest in Sections or solid. and as to the courtesy and Respect to be Exercised as to their Rights and priveledges Between Farmers with Sentiments of Equal Rights to all the States and Exclusive priveledges to none. I remain Respectfuly your Friend if you Stand by the Constitution to the Letter and Intent. A Jackson Democrat Beware the Ides of March As an honest man I tell you the Suthron people will not Stand your administration unless the Personal Liberty Bills are Repealed and the Fugitive Slave Law is carried out. you may think this is written to Intimidate you But it is for no such purpose what I have stated are facts and you will find it so in less than six months. The Suthron States will not be Coerced mark that in your Book. you are in a hard place But come up to the constitution like a man and the country will move on in prosperity. we will not stand Abolitionism in any Shape whatever. Let Northern men stay at home and attend to their own Buisness and let Slavery Alone and they will Live longer and be more prosperous. charity begins at Home and they had better take care of the poor and unfortunate at Home than to be meddling with other peoples property. we want nothing but our Rights in the Union and will protect them out of it.
