Hugh LeBaron ======================================================================== Perry County, Alabama Volunteers in the Creek Indian Wars of 1836 ====================================================================== In the 1832 Treaty of Cusseta, Creek Indians ceded their lands in Eastern Alabama to the United States government. The treaty provided that the Creeks select a specific plot of land in Alabama or move to territory provided for them in the West. However, when the time arrived for the Creeks to move, many were unwilling to go and some resisted using force, killing settlers living in or passing through the ceded lands. Most of the deaths occurred along the Federal Road that entered Alabama opposite Columbus, Georgia, passed through the Indian lands and exited Alabama west of Mobile. In response to the deaths and fears of the people of Alabama, the President of the United States called several brigades of Alabama State Militia into service because of inadequate Federal forces in the area. Among those called into service was a militia unit from Perry County, Alabama known as Abbott's Company after its Captain John Abbott of Perry County. The official record regarding these Perry County volunteers is murky and provides practically no clues regarding their service in what became to be known as the Indian Wars of 1836-37. Andrew B. Moore and J. C. Harrell reported the election of officers for the Perry County Volunteers to the Governor of Alabama on February 29, 1836.
