Garner, Former Resident POLICE HOLD EMPLOYER Horace Franklin Garner, 40 year old furniture factory foremen and a former resident of Marion, was shot to death in Monroeville early Monday. His employer is reported by authorities to have surrendered in the case. Sheriff E.E. Nicholas said Hugh Dickson, owner of the Woods Products Company, told him he fired at Garner, in self defense without knowing who he was. Dickson was being held on an open charge, pending a preliminary hearing. Nicholas said Dickson told this story: Garner and an unidentified Negro interrupted Dickson's sleep by "cussing and wrangling" under his window during the early morning hours. Dickson fired a .22 rifle into the air from his porch, and when the pair continued their wrangling a few feet up the street, Dickson started toward them. When he was within about 100 feet of them, a white man walked from behind an automobile with a shotgun and was swinging toward Dickson when he opened fire with his rifle. Dickson said he thought the men were trying to break into his factory. Mr Garner is survived by his wife, Mrs. Velma Garner, of Monroeville; a sister, Mrs. Elam Holmes of Marion; a brother Ralph Garner of Mobile; the parents, Mr and Mrs W.E. Garner of Marion, and three children by a former marriage. Funeral services were conducted at Mt. Nebo Church, in Perry County, Monday afternoon, with burial in the adjoining cemetery, the Rev. W.O.Phillips, pastor of the Marion Methodist Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Charles E. Logan, Tillman Perry, Bruce Nichols, Jeff Rutherford, Aubrey Moore, and Henry Pitts.
