Mary C. Ham was born 1855 in Perry County, Alabama to William J. and Eliza Morton Ham. Richmond Hughes and Rachel Smith ( Schmidt) Hughes brought their family into Perry County, Alabama some time around 1830. They left Rowan County, North Carolina, removed to Lincoln County, Tn., Escambia County or Baldwin County, Alabama into Perry County, Alabama where they all raised large families. The Hughes men were farmers and blacksmiths living in Severe Beat. The earlier Hughes families were buried in the Family Cemetery which has been destroyed by a Logging Company. All that remains is one headstone made by Casper Smith Hughes who carved his owm marker with someone later adding the death date. The marker is about 2' by 4' made of iron. At the present time John Allen Hughes of Perry County has the marker in his possession. Casper "Smith" Hughes and Mary C. Ham Hughes had the following children: George Thomas Hughes, Elizabeth "Bessie or Liza" Hughes, William W. Hughes,Albert Hughes, Ben Hughes,James Sanderson Hughes, and Henry James Hughes.
