Unknown why he was born there as his parents lived in Pike Co, Alabama and his siblings all were born in Pike County, Ala. It is a good possibility that his parents were visiting “Relatives” as there were some DeFee’s living in Butler County, Ala. at that time, but never have been able to prove this theory or the relationship. His parents were John L. DeFee and his wife Isabella DeFee nee Baygents. (This name was originally spelled Bagience but the children from Bagience later changed it to Baygents from what I have been informed.) Andrew’s brothers and sisters were: James McCullouch DeFee, Green Pinkham DeFee, Josephine Shanks nee DeFee, Harmon Pratt DeFee, Julia Ardella DeFee and Margaret Adella DeFee. Andrew was a farmer all his life until “The War of the Rebellion” began.(The Civil War). He enlisted on 10 May 1861 in Company K, 1st Florida Infantry Regiment. He was later wounded in 1863 ( Leg wound and which bothered him the rest of his life) and was sent home, where he was paroled out of service at Union Springs, Pike County, Ala. (Union Springs would later be in Bullock County, Ala.) Andrew was a Sergeant when he was paroled. He then returned to farming. Andrew had three brothers that also served in the Civil War. They were Green Pinkham DeFee, James McCullouch DeFee and Harmon Pratt DeFee. They were all in E Company, 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment until Harmon was transferred to A Company. Andrew’s father, John L. DeFee would pass away in 1860 and probate of his estate would last for years…John had abt. 400 acres near the town of Monticello. His wife Elizabeth M. DeFee filed her petition for land belonging to John’s estate on 1 April 1861…She would die about 1865 and the children of John L. would have to wait until the estate was finally settled in 1869. About 1870, Andrew’s brothers, Green and Harmon and their families would migrate to Hunt County, Texas. There they bought some land and continued their farming. The other children, including Andrew Jackson DeFee remained in Alabama and one sister Josephine Shanks nee DeFee would return to Clarke County, Mississippi. Andrew was married three times: #1 Lucinda Wood….Married 28 Jan 1867, China Grove, Pike Co, Alabama, Marriage Book 5, page 663. Lucinda was the daughter of Jesse Gray Wood and Elizabeth Wood nee Crauswell. Jesse was born 27 Dec 1811, Darlington, South Carolina. Elizabeth was born 22 Jun 1816, Pike Co, Ala. Died 27 Jun 1884. Believe these two are buried in Aberfoil Cemetery, Bullock County, Alabama in unmarked graves. The parents of Elizabeth Wood Crauswell were Eli Crauswell, born 22 Aug 1795, South Carolina and Elizabeth Nancy Smith, Born 2 May 1800, S. Carolina. Another daughter was Mary Polly Crauswell who married Richard Carr. Lucinda was born 31 May 1843, Pike Co, Ala. and died 10 May 1884. Lucinda was mother to all of Andrew’s children. They had one son and five daughters. All are buried in Aberfoil Cemetery, Bullock Co, Ala. Have an old tin Plate photo of Lucinda and Andrew. Written on the back is “Jack and Lou”, circa abt.1880. #2 Wife of Andrew was Sarah “Lizzie” Tate….Married 18 January 1887, Pike Co, Alabama.
