They had children George Orpah., born May 8, 1899; Zeoma, born October 14, 1900, who died at about nine months on July 25, 1901; and Alice Irene, born December 18, 1901. C. Alice was sitting by an open fire, bathing three-week-old Irene on January 8, 1902, when her clothing caught fire. She died later that day of severe burns. She was buried at Hopewell Community Cemetery across the road from Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church near Henderson. Her two children surviving her were reared by their father Otis and his second wife, Hattie Richburg, who was a kind mother to them. C. Alice was 24 when she died. Her twin Beatrice had died at age 23 on October 4, 1900, two days after giving birth to a baby and its dying the same day. Their sister Molsey Dosha died at age 29 on March 17, 1903, a week after giving birth to triplets, who only survived a few months. She and her husband Eugene had three other children who survived the triplets. Following are newspaper accounts of C. Alice's death: “The Montgomery Advertiser,” Montgomery, Ala. - January 10, 1902 Burned To Death. Mrs. Otis Paul Meets With a Terrible Fate Troy, Jan. 9 - Near Henderson's store, about twelve miles southwest of this city [Troy], yesterday morning, the clothing of Mrs. Otis Paul [C. Alice Johnson Paul] caught fire while she was standing near the fireplace, and her lower limbs and back were burned to a crisp. She died at 2 o'clock yesterday evening. “The Elba Clipper,” Elba, Ala. – January 16, 1902 A Sad Accident Troy Messenger – Yesterday evening in the Henderson community, Mrs. Odus [Otis] Paul [C. Alice Johnson Paul] was the victim of a very sad accident. Report says that her clothing caught fire from the fireplace flames and that so badly was she burned that the attending physician could give but little hope for her recovery. And during the evening she succumbed – passed from the agonies of fresh burns into the arms of the maker, into the sweetest peace. Mrs. Paul was a young woman, the daughter of George Tobe [Sosbe] Johnson, one of the most progressive and influential citizens of the county. She had been married only about a year. [She had been married longer than a year … had married on Dec. 23, 1897, and had borne two children prior to the birth of the new baby about three weeks old]. We regret the unfortunate occurrence and join with the people in extending our heartfelt sympathy to those concerned.
