July 3 1890 Source: Library Page/Column: Page 2, Column 3 The Burning of Troy - Many Businesses Destroyed TROY, June 30. One-fourth of the business portion of Troy is now but ashes, and the walls of buildings are tonight but silent and ghastly sentinels in the moonlight. At 1 o’clock to-day when nearly all the people were at dinner, flames were discovered pouring out of the hide and junk shop of M. Bashinsky & Co. in the center of the public square. Aided by a brisk wind the flames spread like wildfire and the intense heat of the day was only an additional hardship upon Troy’s firemen, who responded promptly. The first brick building to catch was the Messenger building on the west side of the square, W. W. Jones’ saloon, Jolly’s tin shop, Jackson’s hide shop and L. and W. J. Henderson’s sales stables. Crossing Jones Street the splendid little opera house and the entire block upon which it was situated was soon a mass of flames. The Troy iron works and Rainer & Henderson’s stables, also on this block, were destroyed. The entire south side of the square was licked up like tinder by the angry flames. On the south side of Love Street E. G. Chaffin’s warehouse, residence and grocery store were engulfed in the general ruin; on the east side of South Oak Street Terry’s gun shop and one or two other small wooden buildings were burned. It is impossible to tell what is the loss in dollars and cents right now, but $100,000 would scarcely cover it, though most of the parties had some insurance.
