All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Debra Maddox Wilson JWi4194718@aol.com July 21, 2005, 4:33 pm Civil War Zachariah enlisted at Greenville,Butler Co;Alabama February 1 1863 as a Private.The unit completed its organization at Dalton,Georgia.The men were from Dallas,Madison,Macon,Lauderdale,Jackson,Marengo,Perry,and Conecuh Counties.They were order to Virginia ,the unit fought in the Battle of Manassas under General B E Bee.They lost thirty-three percent of the 750 engaged,included all its field officers.Later it was assigned to General Law's and W F Perry's Brigade,Army of Northern Virginia.The unit was active in Seven Pines and to Cold Harbor except when it was detached with Longstreet at Suffolk,Chickamauga,and Knoxville.The regiment was placed in the trenches of Peterburg and ended the war at Appomattox.It was reported 130 men was disabled at Gaine's Mill,63 at Second Manassas,and 87 at Gettysburg.Thirty-three percent at Chickamauga and thirty percent of the 250 at The Wilderness.This unit surrendered with 21 officers and 202 men.The field officers were Colonel P D Bowles,Edbert J Jones,and Evander M Law;Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J Goldsby,O K McLemore,and L H Scruggs;amd Major Benn Allston,T K Coleman,W Mack Robbins,and Charles L Scott. Additional Comments: Zachariah was born July 17 1827 in Goshen,Pike Co;Alabama.He died November 7 1897 Goshen,Pike Co;Alabama.His parents were William Wingard and Ellender Burgess from Goshen,Pike Co;Alabama.He married Sarah Ann Rebecca Wyrosdick 1848 in Pike Co;Alabama.She was the daughter of Thomas Bridges Wyrosdick and Sarah Zimmerman.Zachariah and Sarah are buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in Pike Co;Alabama.
