Her husband was a member of the home guards, but her son, J. E. Spradley, was a member of Co. "C" 17th Alabama, in General J. E. Johnson's army. He surrendered at Danville, Va., at the cessation of hostilities. He was run over and killed by a train at Patsburg some years ago. Mrs. Spradley was 81 years of age on July 28th. ------------------- Mrs. Martha Stephens, wife of J. E. Stephens, is still living. Her son Wm. Allen Stephens was a Confederate soldiers in McIntyre's Company, Hilliard's legions. He died of a relapse of measles in Tennessee. ------------------ Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, living near Luverne, who is now 84 years of page, is the mother of W. A. Jones, of Tarentum, who was a Confederate artillery-man during the war between the states. ------------------- We are informed that Mrs. Nancy Rhodes recently published as a living mother, has been dead for some time. The following was the notice in regard to her: Mrs. Nancy Rhodes, of Goshen had five sons in the Confederate army, one of who died the army." (1) (1) Troy Messenger, Confederate Mothers Yet Living, 9 Aug 1905, p. 2. --------------- Mrs. Wm. Norton, of Midway, who was a resident of Troy in the early sixties, is a Confederate Mother. She is now eighty-six years of age. She had three sons in the Confederate army. It is understood that they were in the 15th Alabama Regiment. Mrs. Norton's friends in Troy will be glad to know that she is still alive and getting along well. Major Thos. M. Murphree has just received a letter from Mrs. W. H. Pennington, of Paulsvalley, Indian Territory, but formerly of Troy, in which she says that her mother, Mrs. W. H. Roberts is still living at Greenville, Texas. Mrs. Roberts is now eighty-three years of age, and can get along only by the aid of a stick. Mrs. Roberts was before marriage a Skinner, and has relatives in Pike County. She was the wife of Dr. W. H. Roberts, who is remembered by all of our older people. Mrs. Roberts was the mother of Lieut. Louis A. Roberts, of Co., "A" 39 Alabama, who was killed at the Battle of Bentonville, N. Note: Julia Spradley's son, James Erwin Spradley was born on 1 Oct 1846 in Lowndes Co., AL died on 17 Jun 1893 in Crenshaw Co., AL. He is buried in Live Oak Cemetery, Patsburg, Crenshaw Co., AL. Elizabeth Jones' son, William Asa Jones was born on 29 Jan 1845/46 in Butler Co., AL and died on 23 May 1921. He is buried in St. John's Church, enlisted in 1863 at Savannah, GA in Terrell's Artillery (Farrell's Artillery ?).
