Judge J. S. William's yesterday sentenced R. Elmer Phelps convicted of
the murder of his wife to die in the electric chair at Kilby Prison Oct. 23
Attorneys for Phelps filed notice of appeal.
Rejecting an insanity plea, the jurors returned the verdict finding
Phelps guilty of murder in the first degree about five hours after
receiving the case.
Phelps was arrested after the body of his wife was found on a bed in her
home.
Examination showed that she had been strangled and also that an ice pick
had pierced her heart. Chief of Police O. O. Gay testified at the trial
that the husband admitted choking and stabbing wife.
Mrs. Phelps (Sarah J. McLendon) for whose death Elmer Phelps will pay with his 
life, is a former Pike Countian, living in the Josie Community before her 
removed to Phenix City. She was buried at Bethel Cemetery, Pike County Aug. 
31, 1936 She has many relatives in the county, including a daughter, Mrs. Ned 
Russell of Ansley, five brothers, Claude, Jim, Clarence, Emmett and Jack 
McLendon of Banks and a sister, Mrs. Alpha Warr also of Banks.

Sarah J. (McLendon) Phelps was the daughter of Ira Green & Nancy Elizabeth 
Belle (Martin) McLendon
