Fayetteville Observer, Sw, 01/02/1864 January 2, 1864
Alabama --- A subscriber in Pike county writes on the 15th inst.:---
 
     "The winter so far has been very severe in Alabama; 
we have had nothing like it since the winter of 1855
and 1856    I have seen ice over two inches think   Oats
and a great deal of the wheat have been killed by the
cold weather   The quantiy of land in wheat I suppose
is a hundred per cent more than has usually been sown
heretofore"
