BEARD, NETTIE KING (b .5-27-1882 – d. 2-25-1981)

	Mrs. Nettie King Beard, 98, died early this morning at her home at 519 Second
Avenue in Troy, Ala., where she lived with her daughter Hazel Pouncey.  She was
only two days short of 99 years and was a lifelong resident of Pike County. 
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Primitive Baptist
Church near Henderson, Ala., where she was an active member for 65 years until
her death.  Elder J. P. Morgan will officiate, and burial will be in the
Hopewell Community Cemetery across the road from the church, with
McGehee-Dillard Funeral Home of Troy directing.  Grandsons of Mrs. Beard will be
pallbearers.
	Mrs. Beard was the widow of Jefferson Beard, a Pike County farmer.  She was
born in Coffee County just over the line from Pike and was reared in the County
Line Community there near Hopewell.  Her parents were H. A. “Sandy” and Iola
Jackson King, some of Pike County’s pioneer citizens.
	Mrs. Beard was not only active in her church but also in the Henderson Quilting
Club.  She had continued with her quilting hobby until two years ago.
	Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Ina Drinkard, Mrs. Louise Calhoun, Mrs.
Irene Richburg, Mrs. Mary Shirley, and Mrs. Hazel Pouncey, all of Troy, and Mrs.
Julia Johnson of Goshen, Alabama; one son, Roy A. Beard of Troy; one sister,
Mrs. Foy K. Bruce of Brandon, Florida; 29 grandchildren; 81 great-grandchildren;
and 14 great-great grandchildren.  Her eldest son, Lawton Beard of Sanford,
Fla., died in 1961.
