A. Cowart, whose sudden death last Saturday noon [Jan. 20, 1940] came as a distinct shock to his family and friends. He was the brother of Mrs. Milton Whaley who preceded him to the grave by six and one half years. Rarely are found combined in one character more lovable traits, higher ideals, a more brilliant intellect, kindness, thoughtfulness, a deeper and more abiding faith in the Lord Whom he served devotedly, uniform courtesy toward all with whom he came in contact, than were illustrated day by day in this exemplary life, which will remain as an incentive and inspiration to all who knew him. Among those who attended the funeral of Mr. C. A. Cowart at Little Oak Sunday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Jones, A. D. Jones, Sam Whaley, Wiley Sanders, Lester Whaley, Mrs. L. E. Whaley, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Massey, and Mrs. Robert Massey. Additional Comments: Mr. Cowart was born Sept. 16, 1859 and lived with his parents, Jackson and Nancy Carter Cowart, in the Little Oak area at least part of his childhood. “Alabama Deaths and Burials Index 1881-1974” shows that he married Mora Lillian Cross on 11-7-1889, and U.S. Censuses 1880 to 1910 show that he and family lived in the Darby’s Beat area of Pike County. By 1920, they were at Little Oak. His wife died in 1935. He was a farmer. He died at age 81 and was buried in Little Oak Cemetery.
