Funeral services were held Nov. 15 at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel, and burial was in Arkansas State Veterans’ Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Johnson was born April 7, 1926, in Henderson, AL, the son of John Irvin Johnson and Ruby May Myers Johnson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Myers Johnson; half brother, George Dalton Johnson; and half sisters, Rosa J. Lott, Bertie B. J. Law, and Willie Mae J. Hill. Mr. Johnson's survivors include his wife, Rebecca B. (Peggy) Johnson, son Lee Irvin Johnson (and wife Michelle), all of Jacksonville, AR; three stepdaughters; two stepsons; two grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren; his sister, Kathlyn Johnson Folmar, and brother, Clem Joseph Johnson, both of Goshen, AL; a number of nieces and nephews; and also step-great-grandchildren and a step-great-great-grandchild. A World War II veteran, Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Navy in 1944-1946. He was assigned to the merchant ship "Janet Lord Roper," which made a number of runs from the States, carrying bombs and munitions to Naples, Italy; Morlay, France; and Cherbourg, France. He received a Bronze Star from a battle with German bombers off the coast of Northern Algiers during his first trip out. While serving later on the USS "Christopher Greenup," his ship made several trips carrying cargo and troops to Honolulu, HI. He was awarded seven service medals, including for the following campaigns: American, Asiatic Pacific, and European/African/Middle Eastern. Mr. Johnson had traveled a lot in his earlier years and worked in interesting jobs including gold mining and shrimping. After marrying Peggy, he settled with her in the Jacksonville - North Little Rock area and worked for many years in building construction prior to his retirement. Clem reflected on his brother’s life: “John had a vast amount of knowledge. He could find a job any place in short order.
