Regt., died in Atlanta, Ga, June 19, 1864, from the effect of a would received in the desperate engagement at New Hope Church, on the 27th of May. He was about 27 years of age, and a citizen of Slipup, Pike County, Ala., where he leaves a benevolent wife and a host of kind friends to mourn his sad and untimely end. No braver soldier ever drew a sword, no kinder heart ever beat in the breast of man than Capt. Leach's. On the hard fought battlefield of Iuka, received a severe and dangerous wound, though made his and won his laurel. After many months of pain he was again with this command, and was a conspicuous participator in the siege of Vicksburg. When the unfortunate prisoners were exchanged, he with the boys, were seen among the first returning to their post of duty. His gallantry n the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, was never surpassed in point of coolness and bravery which was observed by every comrade and applauded by his superiors. During the campaign from Dalton to New Hope Church, he was seen every where danger was nearest, battling for his country with an enthusiasm never surpassed - every combat adorned his casket with new and fresher laurels. To his company, he was like a loving father to his children - he was adored and admired by every one, and his death carried a lasting grief to every heart, for we can never forget the brave and gallant Captain James M. Leach. M. C., 37th Ala." an unknown newspaper in Pike County.
