File Manager - Lygia D. Cutts SEP 1999 Obit of Doctor/Reverend J. L. Nixon - Pike Co., AL "Killed by Lighting On Friday the 21st inst., Dr. J. L. Nixon, a practicing physician of this place, was instantly killed by lighting. The shock was a most severe one and came near killing other members of his family who seemingly equally exposed with himself. The only other members of his family who suffered materially besides the Doctor, was a little girl, his daughter, about 8 or 10 years of age, who was for a time apparently dead; but the physician who was soon on the spot, immediately exposed both bodies to the drenching rain which was falling in torrents, and the child soon began to show signs of returning life. We are happy to say that it is considered at this writing, out of danger. A large, helpless family is left to mourn his untimely death with his friends. The Doctor was also a Baptist preacher, having the pastoral care of one or more churches in the vicinity." (1) (1) Independent American, 26 Jan 1859. A newspaper published in Troy, Pike Co., AL.
