JOHN HUBBARD (b. 12-16-1876 - d. 11-1936) News reached Troy Tues. that a “Dr. John L. Hubbard” formerly of Pike Co., Ala., had died in N. J. Upon investigation, it was learned that no one of that name had lived in the County. The names were evidently transposed in transmission, as it was John Hubbard Logan, whose mother now resides at Glenwood, who passed away in a N. J. city. The following notice in regard to Dr. Logan’s death has been released: “Dr. John Hubbard Logan, 60, state superintendent of education in N. J., who died Monday at Newark, was a native of Pike Co., Ala. His mother, Mrs. P. J. Logan, lives in Glenwood in Crenshaw County. Three sisters, Mrs. H. Jeffcoat, Mrs. Earl Pollard, and Mrs. Cecil Pollard are residents of Montgomery. Other sisters include Mrs. J. H. Nixon, Mrs. Emory Park of Glenwood, Mrs. J. A. Dean of Fontana, Calif., Mrs. M. W. Petrey of Petrey, Ala., Mrs. C. W. Flynn of Luverne, Ala., Mrs. Mills of Evergreen, Ala., and Mrs. Lawson of Clovis, N. Mex. A. P. Logan, a brother, of Glenwood, also survives, besides his immediate family. “The funeral will be held at Newark. The educator left Pike County at the age of 16. He graduated from Mercer University at Macon, Ga., and was later connected with several of the leading institutions in the East, including Colgate and Rutgers.” ---------- The Troy Messenger had reported on 11-17-1936 the following – before the staff learned that this news was about Dr. Logan rather than a Dr. Hubbard – a mix-up in the name: “Graduating from Mercer in 1900, Dr. Hubbard [really Dr. Logan] later attended the Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University, according to the 1936 edition of “Who’s Who.” He studied in foreign universities and in 1902-1910 taught modern languages at Colgate. At Rutgers, he taught history and political science, and in 1925-1927, he was commissioner of education in New Jersey. He became superintendent of schools in Newark, N. J., in 1927. "Dr. Hubbard [really Dr. Logan] was a Democrat, a Baptist, and a member of many honorary societies, both educational and fraternal. "(A checkup today by this paper reveals that no one knows of “Dr. J. L. Hubbard,” formerly of this county. Col. Graph Hubbard states that the deceased is not a relative of his family and that as far as he knows, outside of his immediate family, there are not relatives of the New Jersey doctor [as a Hubbard] in Pike County.)” Additional Comments: A WWI Draft Registration shows that John Hubbard Logan of Middlesex, N. J., was born 12-16-1876 and that he was 41, tall and slender, and had blue eyes and brown hair. He was associate field director of the Red Cross, Atlantic Division, and his employer was in New York, N.Y.
