A native Trojan, he was educated in Troy [Ala., Pike Co.] City Schools, receiving his higher education at Troy State Normal School, Columbia University, and University of Alabama. Dr. McLure began his teaching career at the Laboratory School of Troy Normal School in 1907. He taught in Disque High School in Gadsden, Ala., was Superintendent of Troy City Schools for 10 years, and was on the faculty of the University of Alabama for 35 years, serving for many years as Dean of the school. Upon retirement in 1959, he was given the title of Dean Emeritus of the University. In 1925, Columbia University Press published, as a book, his doctoral dissertation. He was author of various monographs and magazine articles on professional education problems and issues. Dr. McLure died at age 84. Funeral services will be a 2 p.m. Friday at McGehee Funeral Home Chapel in Troy, with Rev. John Clelland officiating. McGehee will direct the burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Sallie Le Boyd McLure of Troy; one brother, Joseph H. McLure, Sr., Atlanta, Ga.; two nephews, Joseph H. McLure, Jr., Atlanta, and James Martin Farris, Jr., Birmingham; two great nieces of Atlanta; and a great nephew in Birmingham. Active pallbearers will be Frank H. McLure, Dr. William P. McLure, William R. McLure, Ray B. McLure, Dr. Hugh Thornton, Jr., and C. M. Riddle. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders of the Troy Presbyterian Church – also Charles “Tack” Brantley, Joe Kervin Brantley, Marvin Brown, L. D. Bynum, David Conrad, Gibson Clower, Corley Chapman, Sr., Dr. J. O. Colley, Jr., Marvin Dodson, Ed Dunbar, Vernon Grant, Doublas [Douglas?] Griffin, Robert Gilmore, W. E. Hanchey, Herman Jernigan, Charles McKinnon, William A. White, Bill Murphree, Ed Murphree, Foy Pierce, Rudolph Shelley, Ara Thompson, Shirley Wynn, and Walter Walters.
