The space allowed for such notices as this is not sufficient to portray the excellent character of our deceased brother. It is but due to his memory that we should say that he combined the physical and mental powers and the moral virtues that constitute a noble manhood. Possessed with extraordinary intelligence and refinement, he stood in the front rank of a genuine citizenship; but never sought to bring himself into public notoriety. He spoke and acted as duty required and thus merited the universal confidence, friendship and esteem of his entire acquaintance, which he enjoyed during his long and useful lifetime. Deceased was born in Greene County Ga., March 3, 1815, and died at his residence in Pike Co., Ala., May 1, 1887. His father, John Park, was born in Price Edward Co., Va., Dec. 26, 1786. His mother, whose maiden name was Sarah O. Musgrove, was born in Oglethorpe Co., Ga., Jan. 29, 1788. They left Georgia and moved to Alabama in 1839 or ’40, when deceased was about 25 years of age. He was married to Miss Apsey Kolb in Pike County on Dec. 19, 1844, of whom were born to him five sons and four daughters, six of whom are still living, the other three are dead. His wife, the mother of those nine children, was born in Conecuh Co., Ala., Oct. 20, 1824, and died in Pike County on Oct. 24, 1879, after which sad event he remained a widower till death. He professed faith and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ and was received into the Primitive Baptist Church at Hopewell [near Henderson], Pike Co., Ala., and was baptized by Elder Hiram King, as nearly as we have been able to ascertain about 1871 or ’72, where he remained an exemplary member until removed by death, “the voice that Jesus sends to call them to His arms.” He bore his painful and mortal illness with the utmost fortitude and resignation, evincing by many expressions that “For him to die was gain,” while the world, the church and his children have sustained an irreparable loss. His mortal remains were buried with suitable ceremonies in Hopewell Cemetery to repose and wait the voice of the Son of God, to “Rend the tomb, with sweet salvation in the sound.” [See Additional Comments for possible alternative death date] Additional Comments: NOTE: Handwritten beside the clipping of this obituary – in a scrapbook of Marie Jackson Folmar, deceased, formerly of Goshen, Ala., Pike Co. – was this notation: “Died April 24th 1887.” Notice that the death date specified in the obituary is in conflict with this notation of his death date.
