BROOKS (9-1851 – 3-15-1922) (Mrs. George Thomas Sanford Sanders) Brundidge News - Death At Monticello [Alabama, Pike County] Mr. & Mrs. J. N. Haisten and family were called to Monticello Thursday morning on account of the death of Mrs. Haisten’s mother, Mrs. T. S. Sanders [Phalby J. Brooks Sanders], which occurred Wednesday night. Mrs. Sanders, who was one of the oldest, best known, and most highly esteemed residents of that section, had been in failing health for some time, and although her death was not wholly unexpected, it was a shock to her wide circle of relatives and friends in her community and throughout the county. She was 72 years old and a daughter of Mrs. Lucy [R. Frazier] Brooks, one of the most noted of Pike’s pioneer women. [Her father was James A. Brooks.] Rev. Lon Renfroe conducted the funeral at the home where she was born and had lived all her life. Interment [was] at Shiloh church. Deceased was a member of the Christian church. Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters and two sons to mourn her death and to them many friends extend sympathy. Additional Comments: Mrs. Phalby Jean Brooks (“Falby” in some records) married Thomas Sanford Sanders on Dec. 27, 1869, according to a couple of marriage indices – and Dec. 27, 1867 according to a census of Alabama Confederate pensioners in 1921. Thomas Sanford is shown in that census with the name George Thomas Sanford Sanders and as having served for 18 months as a Private in Company K of Alabama Infantry Regiment 33. Children were named in that census as Mrs. Della Haisten of Brundidge, Bob Sanders of Opp, Ala., Mrs. Mae Youngblood of Inverness, Ala., Willie Sanders of Banks, and Mrs. Orie Hamil of Camp Jackson, S.C.
