One more in heaven... It is with sadness that I write this tribute of respect to the memory of Mr. Lee Stephens, husband of Eula Stephens, who lived near our home. Mr. Stephens was born Feb. 13, 1879, being the son of Rev. Joe Stephens and wife, Katie. As a young child he was obedient; as a young man, virtuous, pure and popular, as well as ambitious. He was a source of pleasure to his associates and always made friends where he lived. In consequence of these attributes, he won the affection of an honest, noble and industrious young woman, who became his wife Nov. 25, 1897. God blessed them with success, and to them were born seven bright little children, four of whom are boys and three girls. They lived happily together until Nov. 25, 1910, when God in his wisdom thought it best to take him to a happier home we trust, than this one can ever be; where sorrow not pain ever enter. A host of relatives and sorrowful friends followed him to his earthly resting place, and there they listened to a few fitly spoken words by Rev. J.L. Hand, after which his body was placed at rest in Chapel Hill Cemetery by the W.O.W., until the Lord’s trumpet shall sound and the dead in Christ arise. He was a faithful member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Good Hope, having professed his faith when only a boy of sixteen years. We read in God’s holy word this sweet assurance, “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labors, for their works follow after them”. Mrs. Stephens, it may seem hard and strange to you that your loving companion should be taken so suddenly away from you and your dear little children, and that your home should be so dark. Remember, God works all things together for good to those who love him. This may have been done for the best. Try to think so, at least, and bless His holy name and try to walk and talk before your children as an upright Christian mother. God will help and bless your efforts if you will only trust Him. You have our sincere sympathy and prayers in your trouble. One more at home! One voice of welcome hushed, and evermore One farewell word unspoken on the shore Where parting comes not, one soul landed more- One more in Heaven! One less at home! A sense of loss that meets us at the gate; Within, a place unfilled and desolate; And far away, our coming to await One more in Heaven! Additional Comments: Lee Stephens was killed by two young bootleggers he had taken issue with for selling whisky on the church grounds his grandfather (Joshua)and father helped found. Five years later his widow, Eula Kansas Mills Stephens died of cancer, leaving seven orphaned children.
